The Appalachian Plateau is the smallest of the physio-graphic areas in Georgia, as well as the oldest mountain region in North America. It is located in the north-east part of Georgia. It is referred as the Tag corner (because it connects Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama) and the Cumberland Plateau (because of the broad, flat-topped, 100 mile long Lookout Mountain). The Appalachian Plateau region is a maze of limestone caves, deep canyons, and interesting rock formations.
Within an elevation (the height above sea level) of up to 2000 feet, this region is one of the most scenic but least traveled places of the state. It also has narrow valleys and wooded ridges, because of this many people like to go gliding, hiking, camping, and whitewater rafting. (There is also Lookout Mountain, Cloud-land Canyon, and Sand Mountain in this region.)
The population is approximately 90,000 in this region within the 500 (plus) miles of the Appalachian Plateau. Most of the area is filled with canyons, and national parks. Speaking of canyons, one of the most famous canyons in the Appalachian Plateau is Cloud-land Canyon, which is located between Trenton and Lafayette, and has two beautiful waterfalls that cascade over layers of sandstone, dolomite, and shale millions of years old.
Lookout Mountain is also in the Appalachian Plateau. It is the site of a major civil war battlefield. So is Chickamauga and Chattanooga but at those to locations a lot of civil war bluffs were called.
